History Unfolds on Day 5

11:38 AM: After Day 5, the Chinese lead the charge for gold medals with 17 gold, 27 total while the United States have 29 medals with a line of 10-8-11. That's it for me on this Day 5, but join me for a preview of tomorrow's action at 6:30 PM at www.blogtalkradio.com/hdsports!
11:00 AM: Diving's on again! The 3 M Men's Synchro event was OWNED once again by the Chinese, who won won a whopping 47 points!!! The Canadians still looking for a medal-after Despatie/Miranda finished in 5th, 5 points off the podium.
10:50 AM: Sherrain Schalm-a Canadian fencer-visits with the CBC and she seems frustrated. Talking about the lack of support for sports in Canada and expressing her disappointments in her performance.
10:36 AM: Wow, that's quite something! Earlier, in beach volleyball, Russia faced off against Georgia in a (politically symblic) match that really expressed what the Olympics are about. The two teams embraced eachother and if you're just wondering, Georgia prevailed in the match.
10:19 AM: What a great idea to hold the Cycling Time Trial by the Great Wall!!
10:01 AM: NBC must REALLY like beach volleyball. Or are they just trying to find some "live" action? I don't mind the sport, but NBC's gotta find some other stuff to air at 10 in the morning.
9:42 AM: Earlier, the Canadian Women's 4 by 200 Freestlye Relay team broke yet another Canadian record, not just breaking it...but destroying it by 8 seconds. The suits, the pool and the swimmers themselves are making records look like they were set by a bunch of elementary students.
9:38 AM: The South Koreans upset the USA in baseball earlier with a walk off win, no less!! Maybe this tournament is not going as we would expect...exciting stuff!!
9:37 AM: Last night, France won their first gold medal in wrestling in 84 years!!! Great story!
9:25 AM: Man, fencers are intense! You should hear them holler after each and every point.
9:21 AM: Good morning folks! Just finished watching Canada's softball game vs. the Netherlands! We won, 9-2! Next game will be against the United States...that one should bring out the best of Canada! The male counterparts-our baseball guys-beat up on China 10-0! So things are looking good for the baseball/softball squads.
____________(Sleep)____________

12:24 AM: I'm tired, time to go to bed. See you tomorrow morning! (Well, I suppose it's morning already...).

12:20 AM: Great sportsmanship by the Americans, coming over to embrace the Olympic Champions!! What a wonderful competition!!!

12:18 AM: The girls from China, who have been through so much, can now forever call themselves "Olympic Champions"!!!!!!!! The roar inside National Indoor Stadium is unbelievable! This is one heck of a gold medal, even for China!

12:14 AM: China's all but got that team gold. Listen to this crowd! They are into it with the music and what a floor routine from Jiang YuYuan. Like Chuck Swirsky would say: "Take out the salami and cheese mama, this ballgame (gymnastics competition) is ova!!"

11:58 PM: Alicia Sacramone falls again in her floor routine. It's not looking good for the Americans and I think the Chinese can slowly go over to the fridge and look for the champagne.

11:55 PM: The United States of America and China go into the final rotation in the Women's Team Finals separated by a single point. The pressure on the floor exercise gymnasts is higher than in a helium tank.

11:46 PM: Uhh oh...American Alicia Sacramone falls on the balance beam. The competition just got very emotional and intimate!

11:40 PM: Baseball is beginning its swan song at the Olympic Games with China and Canada facing off at Wukesong. It's the first inning and the CBC stream is already having problems...*shake heads*.

11:37 PM: The Chinese and the Americans are in a tight fight for first place in National Indoor Stadium. The Women Team Finals are going on right now!

11:29 PM: The fifth world record of the night is shattered by about 5 seconds by the United States of the America in the 4 by 200 Freestyle Relay...and a mediocre anchor lane from Canadian Andrew Hurd can only be good enough for 5th spot after a fantastic leg from Brent Hayden. Canada still waiting for a medal...

11:26 PM: Okay, the world record is about 3 body lengths behind the US. And COME ON ANDREW HURD!!

11:22 PM: The 4 by 200 Freestyle Relay is going on RIGHT NOW. The United States-led by Michael Phelps who has a 2 length lead after the first 200 M. The world record line is about a couple lengths behind.

11:16 PM: The fourth world record of the night!! Stephanie Rice, who won gold in the 400 IM, has now claimed gold in the 200 M! Kirsty Coventry ends up with another silver! Natalie Coughlin holds on for the bronze medal. Julia Wilkinson of Canada

11:01 PM: And hopefully, he'll be able to replace those medals with an Olympic hardware, having qualified 2nd for the Final!! Finally, a silver lining for Canada!

10:57 PM: Mike Brown, Canadian breaststroker, won silver at the 05 World's and gold at the 06 Commonwealth Games, but someone broke in to his apartment and stole them. That's just such a sad story.

10:49 PM: Breaking news from Beijing today. Some officials are admitting that the images of footprint fireworks moving up the North-South axis had some digital touch to it. And that the Ode to the Motherland was not actually sang live by that charming 9 year old girl. It was another girl's voice but the Politburo thought she wasn't pretty enough, so they put another girl in at the Opening Ceremony pretty much to lip synch.

10:38 PM: Two very solid swims from the Chinese in the Women's 200 M Fly semis put them in 1st and 3rd positions going into the finals. When did China start getting hot on the butterfly stroke??

10:23 PM: The GREATEST OLYMPIC CHAMPION OF ALL TIME!!!! Michael Phelps has now won 10 gold medals in his Olympic career!!! And don't forget, another world record, the 25th of Phelps' career, 1 away from catching Mark Spitz in that category! Consider yourselves lucky if you saw that amazing race. This is IMMORTAL HISTORY and utterly incredible!!!

10:19 PM: Here comes Michael Phelps in the Men's 200 M Butterfly Final!! This is history right here, folks!! Michael Phelps has not lost this race in 6 years. 10 gold medals--here we come!

10:16 PM: Third world record of the day! Frederica Pellegrini of wins an emotional 200 M Free..the Chinese winning a bronze medal! Woohoo!

10:09 PM: And yet another world record!! Eamon Sullivan betters Bernard's time by .15 of a second, about 2 minutes after it was set. Just how much can they shave off of the history books? Brent Hayden finished with a disappointing 48.20...no final for the reigning world champion.

10:04 PM: Alain Bernard, the man who was chased down by Lezak in that sensational 4 by 100 Relay, sets a new world record of 47.20 in the first semi of the Men's 100 M Free.

9:55 PM: In the history of the Olympic games, there have been only five 9-time gold medallists. Paavo Nurmi of Finland, a legend. The incomparable Carl Lewis from Team USA. Russian Larysa Latynina. Mark Spitz. And now...the Baltimore Bullet-Michael Phelps!! Tonight, in about 15 minutes, Phelps will be making history, so likely to win his signature event the 200 M Butterfly. The photographers are in their positions. Bring on the swimmers!

9:51 PM: Remember Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser?? They've advanced to the playoff round. So the world champs prove that the pathetic first match vs. the Latvians was just a bad fluke. These guys are taking it to their opponents, winning 21-12, 21-13 in just 39 minutes today!

6:59 PM: Let's get Day 5 started!!!! 17 gold medals to be handed out! And 2 of those is likely to be around Michael Phelps' neck by about midnight tonight. Michael Phelps will be making history at the Water Cube tonight going for his 10th and 11th CAREER Olympic titles, the most ever for an Olympian. And they will be his 4th and 5th gold out of an almost guaranteed 8. You have got to tune in to Prime Time tonight! Don't want to miss out on Olympic history!! But don't count out the Canadians, Alexandre Despatie and Arturo Miranda are on the list of contenders for the Men's 3 M Springboard Synchro event. Our relay team will hope to make some noise in the Cube tonight, having qualified for the final of the Men's 4 by 200 Freestyle event. Brent Hayden and Colin Russell were rested so they could be pumped up for this final. We may very well see Canada on the medal board by tomorrow morning.

6:30 PM: I'm on air at www.blogtalkradio.com/hdsports for a recap of Day 4. Lots to talk about-gymnastics, swimming...join me!

  1. mmhm I love your live comments danny! Keep up the good work! Too bad the Canucks fail to win a medal at the 10m springboard...our medal hopes are slowing fading away...
I'm betting a gold on the rowing eights, but anything can happen.
Great baseball game btw. Though Canada winning 10-0 is a little too one-sided.

  2. Thanks alot Kevin!!! Yea, Canadians could be doing better. the rowing eights and Adam van Koeverden are our best bets for gold. But yea, thanks for letting me know the baseball score, I didn't know (or expect) Canada beat China that badly. Only if they could do that to the USA.
Keep on reading, lots of good stuff still to come!
